Get down to some ‘compost disco-ing’ at Sutton farm’s wassail

Sutton Community Farm will be staging its Winter Wassail 2025 on Saturday February 1, reviving a traditionally English, medieval celebration aimed at blessing the upcoming harvest season.

Farm pitch: a bit of Wassailing with visitors at Sutton Community Farm’s winter event

All the family can enjoy the day, where the centerpiece is the wassailing ceremony at 1pm, when visitors will join local musicians in the ancient custom of singing to apple trees to ensure a bountiful harvest. This traditional practice, dating back centuries in agricultural communities, demonstrates the farm’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while engaging the local community.

The farm is open for wassailing from 11am to 3pm.

“Our Winter Wassail celebrates both our agricultural roots and our community’s future,” according to one farm staff member. “It’s an opportunity for south Londoners to connect with local food production and traditional farming practices.”

The event offers various activities including crown-making workshops with foraged materials, a “compost disco” where participants help maintain the farm’s composting system and live musical performances.

Visitors can enjoy seasonal organic food and drinks, including mulled cider and fresh hot chocolate, with homemade cakes baked by staff and volunteers.

Tickets are available on a sliding scale to ensure accessibility: £10 (Feeling Generous), £5 (Standard) and £2 (Feeling the Pinch), with free admission for children. All proceeds support the farm’s community initiatives and sustainable farming practices.

“Sutton Community Farm, South London’s only community-owned organic veg farm, operates on a mission to nourish people, nurture the planet, and cultivate community through organic farming methods and community engagement,” the farm says.

Sutton Community Farm is at 40a Telegraph Track, Wallington SM6 0SH, off Woodmansterne Lane.
