Hero Hirai joins the Pirates’ perfect pitch for women’s baseball

Croydon Pirates Baseball Club is launching its first women’s programme, aiming to start playing in the 2025 season.

As part of this initiative, the Pirates will be hosting a “Intro to Baseball” session on Saturday, February 1, from 6pm to 8pm at Wallington County Grammar School.

The session is open to women of all experience levels over the age of 14 (the minimum age to play in the British Baseball Federation’s women’s league).

Spaces for the session are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn the game from leading coaches and ambassadors of British baseball, headed by Laura Hirai, pitcher for the Great Britain national team.

Hirai will be assisted by Timo Ssali, the infield coach for the national team.

“We’re incredibly proud to expand our club with a women’s programme,” said Mark Bonney, the Pirates’ general manager.

“Baseball is growing rapidly in the UK, and we’re committed to creating a welcoming space where women can play, learn and thrive in this amazing sport. With Laura and Timo’s expertise, we’re confident this will be an unforgettable start.

“This indoor session marks the first step in building a strong, inclusive women’s baseball community in Croydon. All equipment will be provided, so attendees only need to bring their enthusiasm and a pair of comfortable trainers.”

As well as playing opportunities in the women’s league, there’s also adult mixed teams during the regular season.

In August, Britain’s women play in the European championships. They first competed in Europe in 2022 and won their first game against the Czech Republic.

Croydon Pirates is one of Britain’s most established clubs, having been established in 1981. Based at Roundshaw Playing Fields in South London (CR0 4RW), the Pirates are dedicated to growing the sport at all levels, offering programmes for players of all ages, genders and skill levels.

Last year, Croydon Pirates men’s team became the British Baseball Federation AAA champions.

The women’s baseball open evening is being staged in the sports hall at WCGS, Croydon Rd, Wallington SM6 7PH.
