“This is Croydon, isn’t it?”

Crime scene: Bensham Lane, with an increased police presence as they sought evidence connected with the murder
That was the response from a Bensham Lane resident when asked by the BBC whether the area is unsafe, following the latest murder in Croydon, a 30-year-old woman who was found dead by first responders shortly after they were called out at around 7pm on Monday night, January 20.
Two 21-year-old men, said by police to have been known to the woman, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.
A post mortem was to have taken place yesterday.
Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, who leads policing in Croydon, said: “At this early stage, we believe that the two men were known to the woman and there is no threat to the wider public.
“I understand the impact this incident will have on the community and we are doing everything in our power to investigate the circumstances of what happened. Throughout the day you may notice a higher police presence in the area, please do voice any concerns to officers.
“Although we have made two arrests, we still need to have an understanding as to what took place last night in Bensham Lane. Did you hear anything unusual? Did you see anyone leaving the property? If you did, then please do the right thing and speak with us.”
Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5952/20Jan.
