Purley Scouts explore Epping Forest and discover much more

The Explorer Scouts from 30th Purley Masjid Scouts spent the day at the home of Scouting – Gilwell Park in Epping Forest – taking part in a range of activities including fire lighting, archery, fencing, building shelters and informal time in the mosque on the camp site.

On target: archery is one of more than 200 activities available through the local Purley Scouts

“I became a Scout and it’s the best thing I have ever done,” said Amrah, aged 17.

“I’ve learned so many skills. I’m now a young leader and it’s amazing. It’s a brilliant community and I’m so pleased to be a part of it.”

And according to the Scout group’s leaders: “Explorer Scouts is all about encouraging young people to try more, see more and do more. It provides them with the chance to dream big, find their place, be accepted and make memories and friends that will last a lifetime. The Scouts, bring people together and build stronger communities. But most of all, they help young people see that anything’s possible.”

Yasin Mohamed, aged 14, said, “I love being in Scouts because of the community of friends I have made. The Scouts’ community help and supports each other, it’s brilliant.”

In a recent poll 94% of Scouts said they had developed useful skills, and 88% said they’ve tried activities they haven’t tried before.

Camp fire: for all the modern activities, there’s still some more traditional Scouting possible, too

Scouts offers more than 200 activities from abseiling and coding to drama and water-zorbing.

30th Purley Masjid Scout Group meets at the Scout Hut, off Hillars Heath Road, Coulsdon CR5 2JP. If you have a skill, interest, knowledge, or hobby you would like to share they would love to hear from you.
