Banking services return to Coulsdon’s high street this week

Coulsdon’s Banking Hub opens for business tomorrow, thanks to the hard work of community volunteers at the local residents’ association, supported by Cash Access UK.

Hub-a-bubba: Coulsdon gets proper, in-person banking facilities once again from tomorrow

Cash Access UK was set up by major high street banking businesses to protect access to cash across the country. Coulsdon, one of Croydon’s more bustling, better-served district centres, has been without a bank branch for more than a year.

But from tomorrow, that’s all about to change, with the official opening at 152 Brighton Road due to take place at 11am, “and everyone is welcome to attend”.

Suitably, and decently, rather than some here-today-gone-tomorrow politician, the ribbon-cutting duties have been given to Charlie King, the chair of the East Coulsdon Residents’ Association, who lobbied for the hub on behalf of his community.

A banking hub is a shared banking space on the high street which offers a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

The hub also offers a “Community Banker” service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated issues. The bankers work on rotation, with a different bank available on each day of the week. Community bankers are usually provided by the banks with the most customers in the local area.

The rota at Coulsdon for Community Bankers will be:

Monday: HSBC
Tuesday: Santander
Wednesday: Barclays
Thursday: NatWest
Friday: Lloyds (from May 2025)

“Finding the right location for a banking hub that is convenient, accessible and works for everyone often takes time,” Cash Access UK said today, saying that they are “delighted to have been able to secure convenient premises in the heart of the Coulsdon community”.

The announcement said, “Our team has been working hard to fit out the premises over the past few months in preparation for the opening.”

Community leader: ECRA’s Charlie King

This is the fifth hub to open in London following Acton, Chingford, Willesden Green and Welling.

Coulsdon was recommended as a banking hub location by LINK, the cash access and ATM network, following Charlie King’s request for an assessment of gaps in access to cash locally.

King said: “I am pleased that LINK and Cash Access were able to respond positively to our request for a banking hub in Coulsdon.

“The loss of all the major banks in Coulsdon has caused many problems resulting in people having to visit banks in Croydon, Redhill or Wallington, taking up to hour of their time for a round trip.

“It is nice to see the banking hub is in the middle of Coulsdon town centre which should enable visitors to spend a bit of time in Coulsdon to the benefit of other shops and businesses.”

The full address of Coulsdon’s Banking Hub is 152 Brighton Road, Coulsdon, Surrey, CR5 2YQ. Conveniently, the hub also has access from Chipstead Valley Road.
