The London Wildlife Trust, who run several nature reserves in the Croydon area, including butterfly sanctuary Hutchinson’s Bank, visited recently by an Inside Croydon botanic amble, are now offering free copies of a guide to those star visitors of summer, swifts, swallows and martins.
These fantastic migratory birds are among the species under threat because of loss of habitat and nest sites, but also because of climate change: after flying all the way to south London from sub-Saharan Africa for their breeding season, our ever-warmer winters and springs are leaving the birds out-of-sync with the appearance of insects which form a major part of their diets, and provide food for their chicks.
The London Wildlife Trust’s free guide includes:
- Identification advice to help you tell them apart
- Fascinating facts about these amazing high fliers
- Insights into their migration habits
- How you can help them in your garden or green spaces
- Tips on how to build a swift box
