Mystery surrounds Banksy-style mural on Coulsdon by-pass

Jump to it: the mural appeared on the wall of the Coulsdon by-pass last week. The identity of the artist is not yet known

Do you know the playful, mischievous artist responsible for the latest piece of street art to appear in Croydon?

That’s the question that Coulsdon locals have been asking for a week, since the jumping boys appeared on the brickwork of the by-pass bridge over Brighton Road, near Coulsdon South Station.

‘Rainbow Boy’: these appeared in 2020, when the artist identified himself

The painting has been described as “Banksy-style”, but is not thought to be the work of the world-famous artist.

“I’m not sure it’s a Banksy, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t by Mayor Perry,” one local told Inside Croydon.

Back in 2020, in the midst of the covid lockdown, one locally based artist, State Of The Art, Chris Shea, raised thousands of pounds for health charities by providing stencilled Rainbow Boy paintings.

Shea, who more recently has been meeting commissions from delighted Crystal Palace fans to deliver colourful Eagles designs, has not claimed credit for the Coulsdon mural.

“We have asked the council not to remove it,” the Coulsdon source said.

  1. Since when has graffiti been mischievious? I’m contacting the council’s clean-up team to get it expunged. The Mayor – the exec one – might do the job himself

  2. Jim Bush says:

I guess there is a distinction here between graffiti and street art? The jumping boys at Coulsdon bypass is at the street art end (and doesn’t need removing), whereas the thug who painted “CAVE PIG SONY” in huge letters on the wall of a building overlooking the Windrush line near Surrey Quays station is just graffiti (and should be painted over).

    • Things have moved on since I was a kid in the ‘sixties when a cock and balls scrawl were the highest graffiti art. BTW, I hear they haven’t moved on across the channel where mobile graffiti squads are erasing cock and balls road ‘art’ on the road of the Tour de France (it’s a cycle race)
