Youth theatre celebrates talent at its Diamonds anniversary

Preparations are well underway for Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation’s 60th anniversary celebrations later this month.

A triple bill of plays, together called Diamonds, written by CYTO’s go-to professional playwright, Richard Vincent, will herald the anniversary.

There are nearly 100 in the cast including 19 former CYTO members who are returning to be in the special anniversary production.

Formed in 1965, 60 years is quite an achievement for a local voluntary organisation – especially for one that has carried on for the past 10 years without any annual grant from the local council.

Diamonds’ Saturday evening performance (there’s also a matinee at 1.30pm that day) will be followed by what CYTO’s chair, David Page, calls “a gi-normous after-show party” for CYTO supporters and members, past and present.

Anyone interested in attending the CYTO anniversary party, please contact CYTO at andrewmcpherson@cyto.org.uk.

Following the Community Asset Transfer by Croydon Council of the Shoestring Theatre premises in Oakley Road, South Norwood, in 2023, CYTO is embarking on an ambitious redevelopment plan.

New doors have recently been installed to provide greater security for the young people and a new fire alarm system has gone in to increase the building’s safety, both paid for by the Greater London Authority from the Good Growth Fund.
