No through road: the A236 Southbridge Road is to be closed to traffic from Nov 3-20
Southbridge Road, the busy A236 which links the Croydon Flyover to South End and Bramley Hill, is to be closed to traffic for almost three weeks in November for gas mains works.
Aberdeen Road, which runs from St Peter’s Road in South Croydon to the high street on South End, will also be closed while gas piping contractors replace old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes.
The closures are staggered, with the works on Aberdeen Road beginning on October 27 and lasting until November 2.
Southbridge Road will be closed from November 3 until November 20. That closure will begin the day after the annual RAC London to Brighton veteran car run rattles down the road on November 2.
Gas network engineers SGN have advised residents of the road closures. “This work is essential to make sure you and your neighbours continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply,” SGN said. There is no anticipation of an interruption in gas supplies to businesses and homes during the works.
According to SGN, roads and pavements will be dug up, and Aberdeen Road and Southbridge Road “will be closed to through traffic… a signposted diversion will be in place for vehicles, approved by the local authority”.
The Aberdeen Road closure is liable to impact several bus routes: 119, 312, 466, 405, 60 and 166. Bus passengers should check with TfL’s travel planner web page before they travel.
Any questions about the SGN works in South Croydon should be directed to sgn.co.uk or by calling the company’s customer service team on 0800 912 1700.

Okay so Croydon Council announce on October the 3rd that they will be closing Southbridge Road to allow the gas board (SGN) to go in and dig it all up to replace the gas mains and service pipes. What do you think Croydon Council do two days later?? They spend a load of money sending their highway maintenance contractor (FM Conway) in to renew all the yellow and white road markings for the entire length of the road, knowing that in a couple of weeks, the whole lot will be dug up again by SGN!! Good to see that the LBC highways department are still as inept as ever, even with the biggest clown of all (Mr Iles) having left the building!!
Strictly, Lee, it was not an announcement from Croydon Council. Indeed, our council has done nothing to inform or advise residents of the road closures.
And the extent of the works – and how much of any closed road gets dug up – remains to be seen.
But yes, the timing of the line painting is a masterful example of Croydon Council mismanagement.
