Parts of the A232 Stafford Road are to be closed for two weeks for gas mains replacement works, starting at the end of this month.
This is the third set of road closures for the area on or around the A23 to be confirmed for October and November, and comes in addition to similar gas mains replacement works that will see Aberdeen Road and Southbridge Road closed for much of next month, as well as Transport for London resurfacing the Purley Way south from the Fiveways Junction.
The A23 Purley Way is due to be closed overnight for 11 days, from Sunday October 12 until Thursday October 23, for the TfL works.
The notification sent to residents for the Stafford Road closures is ambiguous, but according to information on one.network, the Stafford Road closures are to take place from October 25 at the Wallington end of Stafford Road, by the junction of Woodcote Road and residential side streets such as Onslow Gardens.
One.network’s site map suggests that there are no planned works for the Fiveways Junction/A23 end of Stafford Road.
The Stafford Road closures “should be finished in around two weeks”, according to the letters sent to residents by SGN, who manage the country’s gas supply infrastructure.

As with the works planned for South Croydon, the Stafford Road project is to replace old metal pipes with modern plastic mains. “This work is essential to make sure you and your neighbours continue to receive safe and reliable gas supply,” SGN says.
There is no anticipation of an interruption in gas supplies to businesses and homes during the works.
Stafford Road runs almost two miles from the junction with the A23 to Wallington.
The closures will affect three bus routes: the 154, 157 and S4. Bus passengers should check with TfL’s travel planner web page before they travel.
According to SGN, roads and pavements will be dug up, and Stafford Road closed to through traffic. “A signposted diversion will be in place for vehicles, approved by the local authority.”
