Open days attract record numbers to Croydon College campus

Qualifications queue: more than 1,000 visitors attended open days at Croydon College and Coulsdon Sixth Form College this month

Bookings are being taken for open days in November for courses from A level to degrees, including the new T levels

Croydon College and Coulsdon Sixth Form College have seen record-breaking numbers of prospective students attending their open days this month, with more than 1,200 visitors across the two sites.

The new style open events are led by current students who share their positive experiences of studying at the two campuses. Visitors were taken on a tour of the facilities by the students, who also gave a talk about their life at Croydon College and Coulsdon Sixth Form College.

The increase in open day attendees and student enrolments has been credited to a recent schools outreach programme. Around 25 local schools have been visited by the outreach team, showcasing the diverse academic and vocational learning opportunities available across Croydon College, Coulsdon Sixth Form College and Croydon University Centre.

Warm welcome: the open days are being led by current students at the colleges

Croydon College is one of the largest providers of further and higher education courses in the south-east, offering more than 350 qualifications.

The Croydon College campus provides education for students over 15, from entry to degree level in a wide range of vocational, general and academic subjects. The Coulsdon campus concentrates on courses for 16- to 18-year-olds – sixth formers.

Overall, Croydon College also has more than 2,700 adult learners.

At the open days, one sixth former, Emmanuel Allotey, took to the stage at the Coulsdon event. “The support that every student can receive here is immense,” Allotey said.

Feedback has been positive from open day attendees, with one prospective parent saying: “The event was busy and energetic, with fantastic student support on the day. Student helpers were confident, engaging and happy to answer our questions about courses and day-to-day life at the college.”

Interest spanned the broad range of academic and vocational qualifications on offer, including GCSEs, A levels, apprenticeships and particularly the newly introduced T levels, which blend hands-on work experience and classroom learning towards a qualification equivalent to three A levels.

  • The next round of open days are to be held next month, with Croydon College on Thursday, November 20 and Coulsdon Sixth Form College on Thursday November 27
