Police appealing for witnesses after collision on Ditches Lane

Remote road: Ditches Lane is the route that cuts across nature reserve and beauty spot Farthing Downs

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was knocked off his bicycle in a collision on Ditches Lane, Coulsdon, around dusk on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police are appealing for witnesses. The driver of a red Hyundai i20, which was involved in the collision, stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their investigation. There have been no arrests made.

Ditches Lane is the north-south route that goes across local beauty spot Farthing Downs from Coulsdon and on towards Chaldon. It is understood to be subject to a 20mph speed limit. There’s a bend and a hill at one point, which can make it difficult to see and be seen.

The police were called at 4.20pm on November 3 to reports of a road traffic collision between a cyclist and a car.

“The cyclist, a 46-year-old man, was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service where he remains in a life-threatening condition,” the Met said in a statement released last night.

Detective Sergeant Jim Hinchcliffe, from the Serious Investigation Collision Unit, said: “We are looking for anyone with information to get in touch.

“If you were in the Ditches Lane area at the time of the collision and may have been a witness, have dashcam footage, or if you have any other information please get in touch by calling 020 8543 5157 and quoting CAD 5284/03NOV.”

1 Response to Police appealing for witnesses after collision on Ditches Lane

  1. James Seabrook says:

It is a 20mph limit as it was adopted by Croydon Council in recent years. Although this limit is in place it is regularly abused. There should be safe spaces for cyclists and this is one area which easily falls into that category.
