Yellow warning of snow and ice across London on Friday

Weather warning: temperatures are expected to fall from midnight tonight

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Croydon and across London and beyond for snow and ice from midnight tonight.

Croydon Council’s gritting lorries have been prepared to tour the borough’s major roads, and some were seen in operation on New Year’s Eve.

The yellow warning is in place between midnight tonight and noon on Friday, from the capital and Kent up to Manchester.

A yellow weather warning indicates that you need to “be aware” of the weather situation. This is the least severe of the three warnings. It means that the weather is likely to have some impact, such as disrupting travel.

True grit: there should be salt spread across the borough’s roads overnight

The Met Office is predicting snow up to 2 inches deep on higher ground in North Wales and north-west England, as temperatures are set to plunge.

Scotland and Northern Ireland are also expected to experience the wintry weather, but with their weather warnings starting earlier than in England and Wales.

The public has been warned to exercise caution if travelling, and to allow for longer journey times.

Yellow cold health alerts have already been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for London and the East, South East and South West of England, as well as the East and West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber.
