Labour minister Streeting opens New Addington health centre

New Addington has a new multi-million-pound Community Diagnostics Centre, which was formally opened yesterday by health secretary Wes Streeting and local MP Natasha Irons.

The centre, on Chertsey Crescent, has been busy with patients since October, and is now fully operational, bringing a “one-stop shop” for NHS testing closer to home for residents.

NHS staff working at the centre can conduct X-rays, ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, CT scans and ultrasounds, as well as cardiology and respiratory services.

It also houses an on-site GP practice. Blood tests are already available through GPs, with full phlebotomy services from May.

The centre has been built on what was local authority-owned land, which was was flogged off to pay down the cash-strapped council’s massive debts.

New facility: the community health centre, including a GP’s surgery, should help reduce patient waiting times

Opening times are, at present, in a little bit of flux, but are expected to be firmed up very soon, so it is worth checking with the centre’s website before setting off for a visit, although it seems that the centre is open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday.

Patients must in any case be referred by their GP for imaging services.

However, I do know that anyone can walk in for an x-ray between 9 am and 5 pm from Monday through Friday.

By providing diagnostics locally, residents are being seen more quickly for scans and tests, reducing waiting times and easing pressure on Mayday Hospital. “Labour’s vision for neighbourhood care will reduce A&E visits, dramatically cut waiting times and reach those most in need,” according to a statement issued on behalf of Irons, the Labour MP for Croydon East.

“New Addington has long faced some of the greatest health inequalities in Croydon and across England.

“Women in Fieldway, for example, are expected to live 14 years less than their counterparts just three miles away in Sanderstead. The CDC aims to close this gap by focusing on early diagnosis, prevention and accessible care.”

Croydon NHS Trust used a £14million investment to build two CDCs in the north and south of the borough – one in Purley and one in New Addington.

“I’m thrilled that my constituents in New Addington now have access to vital diagnostic services right on their doorstep,” Irons said. “This centre means earlier diagnoses and faster treatment.”

And health secretary Streeting said: “It’s centres like this that are driving our mission to cut waiting lists and get the NHS working for patients again. Since July 2024, we’ve cut waiting lists across London by 99,000, helping thousands of people get back to their lives without unnecessary delay.”

I attended this centre end of Dec 25 for Ultrasound scan, whilst excellent all round, it took about an hour bus travel from Sanderstead, 359 and 64. Whereas Purley is 10 minutes on 359. So in future it’s a no from me!
