There’s a Spanner in the works as drag comes to Stanley Arts

Drag race: Matt Miller’s one-man show, Fixing, co-written with Peader Kirk, is on stage at the Stanley Halls this Thursday, March 12

If you want to know more about family break-ups and car breakdowns, then Fixing, performed by Matt Miller and coming to Stanley Halls this Thursday, is the show for you.

South Norwood is the latest stop on a national tour for Fixing, written by Miller and Peader Kirk, where Miller learns the essentials of classic car maintenance, and the right shade of lipstick to do it in.

“When Matt was little, their dad bought a 1952 Sunbeam Talbot Mark II. Dad had ideas that he and Matt would do it up, repair, rebuild together. They never did, and the car festered in a garage. Now in their 30s, Matt would like to learn how to fix the engine. They’d like to learn a bit more about Dad, and that time, when Dad and Mum split up. The time when Matt and Dad were closest.

“Matt can’t do this alone, which is tricky for a solo show. That’s where Matt’s drag alter-ego Natalie Spanner comes in. She knows all about things that girls like Natalie know about. Together, Matt and Natalie will ask, in an increasingly broken world, how might we repair ourselves, together.”

Fixing seeks to initiate conversations around care, nurture, rupture and recovery. Fixing invites audiences to consider what maintenance means to them and their relationships.

Fixing, which premiered in 2024, is the third full-length show that Miller and Kirk have made together, and their first foray into the world of drag. Throughout their work, they combine personal stories and bigger social questions to create work which is entertaining and thought-provoking.

  1. Jim Bush says:

Will Matt Miller’s show called Fixing mention Piss-Poor’s lies about “fixing the finances”?
