Network Rail in late decision to postpone Coulsdon works

The works to the railway bridge over the Brighton Road at Coulsdon South Station have been postponed, as detailed here last week, Network Rail has announced.

Late notice: the Network Rail flyer, issued less than 24 hours before the fortnight’s works were due to begin

The works were due to begin today, with intermittent partial and full closures of the A237 to continue through until early morning on May 1.

Network Rail has given no reason for the postponement, but does say that parts of the Coulsdon South Station car park will still have to be closed off to accommodate plant and machinery.

The works to be undertaken are to install a barrier guard – what some locals call “an idiot board” – to try to reduce the number of collisions with the rail bridge by HGV lorries and double-decker buses. Two previous attempts by Network Rail to install the safety barrier have not been completed.

In their latest notice, Network Rail says, “The full closure of the station car park that was due to take place this week (April 23-27) has been postponed.

“However, some spaces will be unavailable from Friday April 24 to Friday May 1.

“The remainder of the car park will remain open,” Network Rail says.

Adding an apology for the “late-notice change”, Network Rail says that the works are now being “re-planned”.

Network Rail has a dedicated web page for their Coulsdon South works, www.networkrail.co.uk/CoulsdonSouth, or they suggest the public may call their 24-hour national helpline 03457 114141.
