Trevin Campbell was today sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in jail after being found guilty of the 2021 murder of Gary Mayhew.

Campbell was twice arrested for the murder: first in 2021, when he was stopped at Gatwick Airport about to board a flight for Jamaica. After the case was dropped for lack of evidence, a further investigation ultimately led to Campbell’s second arrest last December.
Campbell, 35, of Harrington Road, South Norwood, had been on trial at Croydon Crown Court for two weeks before, on Friday, the jury found him guilty of murder.
According to Scotland Yard, it was 6.13am on October 21, 2021, that police were called to King’s College Hospital, where the victim, Mayhew, had self-presented with gunshot wounds to his legs.
The 32-year-old died in hospital later that day.
Mayhew had been shot minutes after leaving a silent disco in Belinda Road, Brixton, that morning.
“Campbell was quickly identified as a suspect and was arrested four days after the murder, as he boarded a flight to Jamaica from Gatwick Airport,” the Metropolitan Police said today.
The murder weapon has never been recovered.
Campbell was charged with murder but the case dropped in January 2022 when the Crown Prosecution Service ruled there was insufficient prospect of conviction.

Detectives continued to investigate the murder, reviewing CCTV coverage, and Campbell’s mobile phone data which linked him to the scene. Expert ballistics evidence suggested Campbell had fired the fatal shot from a pistol hidden in his jacket pocket.
Campbell was re-arrested on December 12 last year, more than four years after the murder. On this occasion, the CPS authorised charges. Campbell appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court the following day charged with murder.
Detective Inspector Emma Sharp, who led the investigation, said: “This has been a complex and extensive investigation spanning several years. Our officers remained committed to securing justice for Gary and his family and continued to pursue every available line of enquiry to build the strongest possible evidential case.
“The use of firearms on London’s streets has devastating consequences for victims, families and communities.
“This conviction demonstrates our determination to tackle gun crime and hold those responsible fully accountable.”
