Coming to a public space near you? Croydon Council is dealing with rat sightings near College Green
With one of the important roles of Croydon Central’s MP being to act as an unpaid refuse collector, we hope that Gavin Barwell‘s litter picking team, who tomorrow tackle College Green, are insured and protected against contracting Leptospirosis, or Weil’s Disease.
The disease can passed from rats to humans.
While council’s senior management would probably contend that the only Croydon rats are of a corporate kind, eager to leave a sinking ship, it’s the animal version that has been entertaining passers-by on Park Lane, on the opposite side of the urban motorway from the Nestle Tower, while they wait for buses near Fairfield Halls at College Green.

A complaint to the council about both dead and rather more lively vermin scurrying out of holes beneath flower beds by the bus stops has met with a recognition that there is a growing pest problem outside Croydon’s “prestigious” arts and conference venue. Some but certainly not all of the rat holes have been half-heartedly covered with bits of brick.
It’s time to call in the rat catcher.
Whether that’s another “Big Society” service which Barwell might take on remains to be seen.
