Upper Norwood Joint Library, cut adrift by Croydon’s Tory-run council as it blithely broke a century-old agreement that had seen it share the costs of running the public amenity with Lambeth, is getting a bit of help from their friends this weekend, when the Crystal Palace Transition Town group leads a tidy up of the library car park at 2pm on Saturday.
Volunteers – maybe after a visit to the new Crystal Palace market – are very welcome.
The idea is to clear the rubbish, do some weeding and explore the possibility of creating a couple of flower beds.
The organisers ask anyone intending to attend to bring gardening gloves; secateurs or shears might be useful, too. “If anyone who lives close by has some materials that could be used to make some raised beds, that would be helpful as well,” said the organisers.
If children are in attendance, they must be kept under close adult supervision.
“Our much-loved library is a very important part of our community and an anchor to our high street feeding additional customers into our independent retailers who do so much for our local economy,” said Robert Gibson, a member of the Upper Norwood Library Trust and on the steering group of Crystal Palace Transition Town.
“We are expecting a great turnout. As our library serves all five boroughs that make up Crystal Palace, it would be nice to see some of our local politicians get involved too.”
