Planning department performs U-turn over Norbury pub

Croydon’s planning department, which has a well-deserved and growing reputation for arrogantly failing to listen to local residents – see The Ship Inn or the betting shops in Thornton Heath – has made a rapid U-turn on its decision to block planning permission for a new gastro-pub at Norbury Mews.

Norbury Mews: council officials have reversed their previous decision to block a development plan

The decision to block the development was taken by unelected council officials, without referring the decision to the planning committee. The scheme had received 155 applications of support, and just one objection.

But earlier this month, the council backed down and Antic London, who have developed a chain of trendy bars and pubs across south London, will now hold meetings with local government officials to discuss refining their planning application to make minor changes to their scheme for a site which at present a car lot behind the railway station.

The reversal of the council decision came shortly after Inside Croydon carried this article from a local resident, questioning this vacuum of accountability in Fisher’s Folly.

Paul Organe, who wrote that appeal, said: “As a local resident I’m just glad it seems to be going ahead.”

Anthony Thomas, Antic’s founder, told Inside Croydon: “We are delighted with the council’s decision to overturn the rejection and work with us on delivering a great pub to Norbury.

“We would like to say thank you to everyone for their continued support for the project. ”
