Dig in and help with gardening in Addiscombe Railway Park

The FRIENDS OF ADDISCOMBE RAILWAY PARK have an idea, and you’re invited to take part

Addiscombe Railway Park is about to become a haven for gardeners

Addiscombe Railway Park is about to become a haven for gardeners, whether new or experienced

We are thinking about building a community garden in Addiscombe Railway Park, where people can grow food and flowers together, sharing the work as well as the harvests. If this is something you are interested in we would love to hear from you, all abilities welcome.

We are already planting an orchard of apple, pear and plum trees and are waiting for the trees to arrive any day now. We will be sending out a big invite to come and help with the planting, and once in the ground the trees will need to be loved and nurtured for years to come, including watering, pruning, clearing away weeds and, of course, picking fruit.

In addition, throughout the year we will hosting special events in the park where people can join in with gardening, enjoy guided tours, socialise and have fun.

There are lots of reasons to get involved:

  • Meet your neighbours and make new friends
  • Enjoy lots of free tasty fresh organic local fruit and vegetables
  • Learn about trees and plants and how to look after them
  • Learn how to grow your own food
  • Make the park even more beautiful with blossom, flowers and crops all year round
  • Enjoy some fresh air and exercise
  • Provide a home for local wildlife, including our butterflies and friendly bees
  • It’s free!

We already have some tools and gloves, although you would be welcome to bring your own if you prefer.  We are also working with the Organic Master Gardeners, so if you are new to gardening our mentors will be on hand to share their knowledge, experience, and passion for food growing.

There are lots of other ways that you can get involved too, even for just an hour or two each month, like helping with refreshments, organising, marketing or you may have some other talent you are willing to share to make the orchard and garden a success?

We will be holding an open meeting on Tuesday December 8 at the Oval Tavern, 131 Oval Road, Croydon CR0 6BR from 7pm to hear your ideas on how to take the community garden forward, or if you are just thinking about joining us and what to find out more.  You don’t need to book a place, but if you have a chance do try to let us know you are coming.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the meeting, we can capture your input through this short survey, or get in touch by email, Facebook or Twitter if you have any questions or just want to keep in updated.
