Visiting our al fresco studio Under The Flyover is Toby Seth, the headmaster of Whitgift School.
Seth has just completed his first year in charge at the large independent school in South Croydon, a year in which their under-15s won the national schools’ rugby title and his older pupils compiled some of the best International Baccalaureate results in the school’s history.
Under The Flyover turns the tables on the headmaster as we ask him the questions and go through his end-of-year report.
- In the interview, Seth talks candidly about how he justifies the “luxury product” of a £30,000 per year private education for Whitgift’s boys.
- He answers questions on whether Whitgift, like their near-neighbours Trinity, might ever go co-ed and allow girls to join the school.
- Seth talks about the importance of Whitgift School to the Croydon economy, with its near-400 staff, half of them working in support roles including catering, cleaning and gardening.
- The headmaster talks about how he has found “room for improvement” at Whitgift, for the boys studying there and for his teaching staff.
