Croydon’s libraries are looking for volunteers to help children and their parents through the “Big Friendly Read” Summer Reading Challenge.
The vivid imagination of Roald Dahl is the focus for this summer’s reading challenge in Croydon’s libraries
The annual reading campaign aims to get children to read at least six books during the summer holiday.
For 2016 it focuses on the work of Roald Dahl, whose centenary is being marked this year, and who has Steven Spielberg’s take on his book The BFG opening in cinemas this week.
Croydon library volunteers will help children sign up to the challenge, guide them to choose suitable books, and spend time talking and asking questions about what they have read.
Or exactly the sort of thing which Croydon’s professional library staff used to do, when our libraries were operated by the council, rather than being outsourced to a building firm.
The volunteers will also be expected to assist children using the summer reading challenge website, help with special events, and collect data to help with evaluating the success of the project.
Volunteers should be available for at least five sessions of approximately three hours each between now and September 10. No previous experience is necessary, and taking part could be a valuable step in considering a career working with children.
