Join Croydon’s ACE team of conservation volunteers

Happy Valley, Coulsdon, one of the conservation volunteers’ work sites

Could you do something ACE for the environment locally?

The Conservation Volunteers’ Action for Croydon’s Environment team – or ACE – organises regular task days every Wednesday and Thursday in different parks and woodlands in and around Croydon, and they’re seeking eager additional helpers.

Volunteers either meet us at the work site at around 9.45am or meet the mini-bus at 9.30am outside the Crown Court on Altyre Road opposite the Croydon Park Hotel. We usually work until around 4pm and the mini-bus returns passengers to the pick up point at about 4.30pm.

On the day you will need to wear clothes suitable for outdoor work and bring a packed lunch. We will provide gloves, tools, and tea and coffee. Our project leaders will guide you through the work we will be doing each day and provide training on using tools and safe working.

To join us you just need to register with us by completing one of our volunteer welfare forms. Please contact us at our e-mail address (see below) and we will send you one of the forms to complete.

Once we confirm you are registered with us you are then free to join us on as many project days as you wish. Some people come out with us on every project day, some one day a week, and other people just come out whenever they have a free day.

If you want to see photos from our recent projects, they are available on our Facebook page here.

1 Response to Join Croydon’s ACE team of conservation volunteers

  1. This team, and its predecessors, have assisted our local conservation group, the Friends of Foxley, for all of the 25 years we have been working in Foxley Wood. Once or twice a year they field a team of volunteers who have made a major contribution to the installation of steps, seats, tree planting, coppicing, clearing scrub, strimming and clearing paths, glades, woodland edge scalloping and many other associated tasks and activities. All sorts of people participate in what is for many a physically and mentally therapeutic as well as socially valuable cooperative effort. We very much appreciate the extraordinary amount of work that a coordinated group can achieve, and the difference it has made to our local nature reserve. To have a cheerful bunch turn up and, starting with a brew and biscuits, make visible progress towards the objectives, which to those hardy few who turn out month after month seemed in the depths of the miserable winter to be unattainable, has a great effect our own groups morale. I salute those volunteers and urge anyone with an interest in conservation to join them.
