On track: some of the schools’ cars get their racing underway
Two teams from St Joseph’s College in Upper Norwood hit top gear last week, winning their way through to the national finals of F1 in Schools.
F1 in Schools is the official educational competition of global Grand Prix racing. It requires pupils to create their own version of a Formula 1 team, working together in groups.
Assigning roles and responsibilities, each individual takes ownership of a specific area, such as designing the car, manufacturing it, testing it, branding it, or even becoming the Team Principal and ensuring they manage everything.

Pit stop: the teams have spent months getting their cars ready
The competition provides an exciting focus for a school’s lessons in STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Once the school teams have developed their car and project work, they compete in events, putting their cars to the ultimate test, racing against teams from other schools on a 25-metre track, as well as presenting to a team of judges, comprised of industry professionals (and sometimes members of F1 teams).
These events begin at regional level, progress to national, and, for the very best, culminate in competing against other countries in the Aramco F1 in Schools World Finals.
Last week’s regional event was staged at RAF Benson near Oxford, where teams from St Joseph’s – Speed Divas and Shooting Stars – won the right to compete again at the national finals at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham in March.

Chequered flag: getting to the finish first is just part of the F1 in Schools project work
Kerstin Kubisch, the teacher in charge of the St Joseph’s College teams, said, “We had a brilliant time!
“All our pupils worked so hard creating their miniature F1 cars, practising their verbal presentations and producing their project work.
“So for two of the teams – Speed Divas and Shooting Stars – to take the top two spots and progress through to the national finals in March is a really fantastic reward for all their effort.
“Everyone at St Joseph’s College is so proud of them.”
