Keep track of changes: road closures will affect Old Town around Church Street, and Addiscombe, while the trams services are suspended
The planned two-week closure of a large section of the tram network around Croydon town centre for “essential maintenance works” (they are always essential) also comes with a series of road closures and changes to parking provision in Old Town and Addiscombe.
According to Transport for London, the works are “to replace a complex section of track and points between East Croydon tram stop and along George Street (between Wellesley Road and Dingwall Road)”. Points put in pace on top of a bridge over the London to Brighton main railway line is among the complications.
The works are expected to take two weeks. During the period, no trams will run between Reeves Corner and Sandilands, which includes the Croydon town centre loop through West Croydon and on to East Croydon. Services will continue on the rest of the London Trams network as normal.
During the period of the tram track works:
- Part of Church Street will be closed between its junctions with Middle Street and Old Palace Road, and some adjacent roads to the works may be affected.
- Parking and loading bays will be suspended on Church Street (between its junctions with Middle Street and Old Palace Road) and Frith Road (the entire length).
- While the closures remain in force, the alternative route for diverted traffic will be via Drummond Road, Reeves Corner, Roman Way (A236), Lower Coombe Street, High Street, Whitgift Street, Charles Street and Church Road, as appropriately signed.
- Addiscombe Road will be closed in parts during the first week of the closure but will reopen to traffic on morning of February 19.
Transport for London says that, “While the Croydon town centre loop is closed to trams for these works, additional essential maintenance work has been scheduled on Church Street. Additionally, road resurfacing works will take place on Addiscombe Road, from Cherry Orchard Road to Colson Road and Park Hill Rise to Chepstow Road, and on Tamworth Road, from Ruskin Road to North End.

Off track: TfL’s information on tram closures, available once you arrive at the stop
“Taking the opportunity to complete these additional works as part of this closure minimises the need for future closures which would impact the service and customers using London Tram services.”
Navid Golshan, TfL’s general manager for London Trams, said: “This planned maintenance is vital to ensure we can continue to offer customers a reliable service across the London Trams network.
“As part of this closure we have also taken the opportunity to undertake some additional essential works on Church Street, Addiscombe Road and Tamworth Road, with an aim to minimise the need for future closures. I would like to thank customers for their patience while this takes place and would ask anyone travelling to plan ahead, allowing plenty of time for any journey.”
The Hopper fare continues to be available for adult pay-as-you-go customers, giving unlimited journeys on buses and trams for £1.75 when made within one hour of touching in. This means customers should pay no more than normal to complete their journey during these works.
Information regarding these temporary changes and travel advice will be displayed at local tram stops and passengers are “encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options”.
