A Croydon-based business is staging a charity Easter egg appeal: Access Self Storage wants to fill an empty storage unit with donated Easter eggs, in aid of The Felix Project and FareShare.

To fill the container, which is approximately 9ft high and 3ft wide, about the size of an old-style public phone box, the team will need to collect around 200 boxed supermarket Easter eggs, with any extras spilling over into a larger unit.

The Felix Project is a food redistribution charity fighting food waste and hunger in London.

Eggs collected outside London will be donated to FareShare, the national food redistribution charity.

Research has found 1.5million adults in London are struggling to afford to eat every day and 300,000 children are at risk of missing their next meal. Access Self Storage said: “While the Access store teams realise that an Easter egg isn’t going to solve the wider issue, the teams across the country unanimously voted to collect for a food charity this year.”

In total, 34 Access Self Storage stores will be collecting for The Felix Project and FareShare. If every store fills its 2.5m² container this Easter, that will be almost 8,000 Easter eggs that can be collected, all to be distributed to those in need.

Staff at the stroage business have already begun collecting eggs and donations can be made at the store until March 25 – for distribution just in time for Easter.

Richard Smith, from the Felix Project, said: “We are delighted to be working with Access Self Storage and receiving Easter Eggs.

“We know that many families struggle to afford to feed their families. At times like Easter parents often feel more pressure to spend money they do not have on luxuries like chocolate eggs. Being able to get them from their local food banks or other support service is a huge help and means they do not have to worry about their children going without.”

Since the Access Self Storage Easter Egg Appeal launched in 2011, more than 8,000 chocolate eggs have been donated to dozens of charities across the country. In 2024, the business is trying to double that number.
