Coulsdon town centre was locked down by police overnight after a group of men were involved in what the Met described as “an altercation” at around 7.45pm last night.
One man has been arrested, while another has been taken to hospital to treat injuries suffered after a collision with a vehicle.
Police were called to Brighton Road “following reports of an altercation involving a number of men”, a Scotland Yard spokesperson told Inside Croydon.
“It was further reported that a car had collided with one of those involved.”
The vehicle collision is understood to have occurred at the junction of Lion Green Road and Chipstead Valley Road.
“The victim suffered a leg injury as a result,” the police said. “He was taken to hospital where his injuries are still being assessed.
“One man was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident.”
The Met says that its enquiries are “ongoing”.
A 200-yard stretch of the main Brighton Road was closed off in both directions for several hours. Buses were diverted and the Coulsdon Library bus stops closed.
Police cordons were removed from around 9am today.

ROTTEN BOROUGH AWARDS: In January 2024, Croydon was named among the country’s rottenest boroughs for a SEVENTH successive year in the annual round-up of civic cock-ups in Private Eye magazine

I was walking through the area shortly after it happened. Not a pretty sight.
Fair play to the.emergency services, the paramedics were on the scene very quickly and the ambulance soon after. The police had to stay overnight to ensure there was no more trouble and were very pleasant and good-humoured to passers by.
Unfortunately the forces are overstretched and have to spend their resources in situations like this which are completely avoidable. Coulsdon town could be so much better a place with a bit of investment.
‘Altercation’? Group of men, collision with a car, one man arrested, one needing hospital treatment? Probably alcohol involved and too much testosterone. If this was in the north of the borough, this would have been reported as a riot.
