Coulsdon Road closure: diversions and restrictions until Sep 2

Tight fit: HGVs won’t be using Stites Hill Road as a cut-through for the next couple of weeks

Road works have begun today on Coulsdon Road for essential drainage improvements and repairs to the soakaways.

Following a previous abortive attempt to fix the drainage on the road, and postponed closure following residents’ lobbying over Stites Hill Road, an amended scheme of closures and diversions has been introduced, beginning today.

The roadworks, closures and diversions to traffic, including buses, are expected to last until September 2.

The works are due to be finished before schools reopen after the summer holidays.

To reduce disruption, the contractor has extended their working hours to Monday to Sunday from 7am to 7pm.

Council diversions: how the closure of Coulsdon Road impacts a broad area

Coulsdon Road is closed between Old Fox Close and The Grove. Access is being maintained for Fox Lane and Old Fox Close.

Stites Hill Road will remain open for two-way residential traffic, but HGVs will be prohibited through the installation of a width restriction at the junction with Coulsdon Road, thanks to the objections raised by residents’ associations, which their local councillors dismissed as “scaremongering”.

In detail: how the road closures affect Old Coulsdon and Coulsdon Common

Diversion signs will be placed on the road network to direct through traffic away from the area to minimise impact.

Non-local traffic will be diverted as follows:

  • Coulsdon Road
  • Marlpit Lane
  • Farthing Way
  • Brighton Road
  • Purley Cross
  • A22 Godstone Road
  • Wapses Lodge roundabout
  • Croydon Road
  • Station Avenue
  • Church Hill
  • Church Road
  • High Street
  • Townend
  • Banstead Road

Bus route 466 diversions: From August 15 to 8pm on Monday, September 2, route 466 towards Westway will be cutting short of the normal service at the Tudor Rose, Old Coulsdon due to what TfL describes as “sewer works taking place at Coulsdon Road”.

TfL says, “Bus stops between Tudor Rose and Westway will not be served.”

And: “Buses will divert via Chaldon Lane, Rook Lane, Dean Lane, Shepherds Hill, Brighton Road, Farthing Way and Brighton Road in both directions. Bus stops between Hambledon Road and Windermere Road will not be served.

“Please check diversion and curtailment routes with the driver at the start of your journey.” TfL bus diversion info: 0343 222 1234

1 Response to Coulsdon Road closure: diversions and restrictions until Sep 2

  1. Richard Dargan says:

We went for a walk about 1900 on evening of 15th. Saw queuing cars at Coulsdon Road end of Stites Hill Road, and same coming along Stites Hill Road towards Coulsdon Road. Also surprised that the width restrictions were not something more solid, like concrete blocks. Perhaps some form of traffic light control would have been better to prevent possible disputes between drivers trying to get through the gaps. We will see what happens….
