Parts of Lower Addiscombe Road are to have traffic and parking restrictions today and tomorrow, as Croydon once again is providing the backdrop for the shooting of a movie.
In the spotlight: Lower Addiscombe Road is getting the Hollywood treatment today and tomorrow
London-based production company The Imaginarium are using a property on Lower Addiscombe Road and have made arrangements to suspend parking bays and some off-street parking spaces on Woodside Court Road to facilitate their shoot.
Today is a scheduled set-up day, with filming to take place tomorrow, when a bus stop will be suspended from 7am to 3.30pm. Access to other properties and businesses ought not be affected.
The crew will be filming scenes for an Amazon TV drama series, The Girlfriend, “a tumultuous relationship between a mother and her daughter-in-law”, apparently…
“Our crew will work quietly and remain conscientious of local residents and businesses,” a letter to residents from the production company has promised.
The Girlfriend is just the latest screen project to choose Croydon as a location for its dramas, following the likes of Made In Dagenham and The Crown, which had scenes for its final series shot at the Fairfield Halls. Surrey Street and some of the grimier bits of the Cronx have also become popular with directors of TV advertisements.
Inside Croydon’s Caitlin Clifford recently outlined how movie director Andrew Haigh had placed Croydon, and especially his childhood family home in Sanderstead, front and centre in the making of the film All Of Us Strangers, which stars Andrew Scott, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell.
Filmed in the summer of 2022, All Of Us Strangers features not only Haigh’s old home on Purley Downs Road, but other locations around Sanderstead, including the railway station, the Recreation Ground and the high street.
It also shows bona fide stars Scott, Foy and Bell leisurely making their way through the Whitgift Centre – a shot that received laughter and cheers from the Croydon audience during the April screening at the David Lean.

In a previous life I recall residents (of another borough) who attended on-street filming and started banging pots and pans until they were paid off by the location manager. This info might help the residents of Lower Addiscombe Road
Perhaps the cameras should be redirected to the switcheroo of public funds to the private purse witnessed in recent years.
