Mystery in Coulsdon as their ‘Welcome’ sign goes missing

The usually peaceful and slightly quaint demeanour of Coulsdon town centre has been shattered by the mysterious disappearance of the “Welcome to Coulsdon” sign over the course of the weekend.

Gone missing: residents have expressed concern over the mystery of the vanished sign

A slightly bewildered note appeared on the social media pages of the East Coulsdon Residents’ Association yesterday: “Coulsdon mystery!” it said.

“Some time last week the ‘Welcome to Coulsdon’ sign near Dobles disappeared.

“The council say that they haven’t removed it.

“Do you know what has happened to it?”

One of ECRA’s officials has remarked how much time and paperwork with Croydon Council could be involved in getting the sign replaced – not to mention the cost of commissioning a replacement.

The appeal for help and information may have worked, and there is a potentially happy ending.

One resident thinks that they have seen the sign, close by on Brighton Road. Ian Parker, the veteran ward councillor, has volunteered to collect the sign and task the council with re-installing it.

  1. I heard it was being re-painted to read, ‘This is Coulsdon and you’re welcome to it’
