Katie Hurley’s hit show from last year’s Edinburgh Fringe is finally coming home.
The co-producer of the annual Croydonites Festival wrote and starred in her one-woman show at the world’s biggest fringe festival last summer, where You’re So F**king Croydon! was praised for being “Sharp, clever and fun”.
And now there is a long-awaited chance to see Hurley perform her play actually in Croydon, when she rounds off a brief tour with a one-night only performance at Stanley Halls on Friday, May 16.
You’re So F**king Croydon! is “a bold, unapologetic dive into the female working-class experience and noughties club culture, seamlessly blending music, dance, comedy, spoken word and Croydon’s most infamous celebrities”.
The play takes its title, and inspiration, from the notorious comment made by David Bowie after he’d survived a short spell as a student at Croydon Art College.
“It was my nemesis, I hated Croydon with a real vengeance.
“It represented everything I didn’t want in my life, everything I wanted to get away from.
“I think it’s the most derogatory thing I can say about somebody or something: God, it’s so fucking Croydon!”
Set against the backdrop of Croydon’s reputation, Hurley’s show aims to challenge Bowie’s quote.
“It’s not just a story about a place, but about every woman who’s been defined by where she comes from,” Hurley says.
“The show celebrates resilience, power and the refusal to be pigeonholed.”
There’s even the promise of an after-party: “So stick around for a playlist packed with UK Garage bangers and old-school R&B classics — proper Croydon nostalgia.”
Hurley was interviewed about her foray to the Edinburgh Fringe last year on our Under The Flyover podcast.
In our no-holds-barred Under The Flyover interview – warning, the programme may contain adult language – Hurley talks about having an AI Bowie as her co-star, and guest appearances from Kate Moss, Raye and Stormzy on her show.
