The David Lean Cinema in the Croydon Clocktower will be screening Children of the Wicker Man this Halloween, Friday October 31, followed by a very special question and answer session with the documentary’s maker, and sons of The Wicker Man director Robin Hardy, Dominic and Justin Hardy.
This is the first and only London screening of this retrospective on a classic horror film since its premiere at FrightFest.
The Wicker Man is revered as “The Citizen Kane of horror movies” (Cinefantastique), the 1973 movie ranked at No4 in The Guardian’s list of the 25 Best Horror Films of All Time.
The film even boasts a Croydon connection, with Police Sergeant Neil Howie played by Edward Woodward, who was born in Croydon in 1930.
But almost as captivating as the film itself is the stories surrounding its making.
Children of the Wicker Man takes the Hardy brothers back to the film’s famous locations in Scotland, exploring the creative toll The Wicker Man had on their father and how his ambitions had devastating consequences for his family.
Joining Dominic and Justin Hardy for the special Q&A screening is the Dr Chris Nunn, the producer of the retrospective documentary. The trio will also be signing copies of the film’s companion book.
Adrian Winchester, the founding chair of the David Lean Cinema, said: “It’s a great privilege to be hosting an event of this stature, and we’re particularly grateful to Dominic Hardy, who has flown over from Canada to be with us.
“You can expect a unique, deeply moving documentary that reveals an unlikely heroine in The Wicker Man’s production history.”
The David Lean Cinema is Croydon’s arthouse cinema, managed and run by movie enthusiasts and volunteers.

Never know why the David Lean don’t show this forgotten Croydon based psychological horror of the 1960’s. By all accounts an accomplished film with an impressive production list.
