Officials at the GMB trades union have called a pay deal for Bromley’s traffic wardens “significant”, as the workers for a private contractor have been placed on London Living Wage contracts and called an end to industrial action that has lasted four months.

The enforcement officials, who are employed by Germany-based APCOA, have been on a work-to-rule since October, and have taken strike action on 10 days through December and January over their “poverty pay”.

With a much-improved offer on the table from the employers, yesterday the union members voted to end their industrial action.

Until the pay deal was agreed on Friday, traffic wardens in Bromley were paid £12.21 an hour. APCOA staff doing similar work in Lambeth and Wandsworth are paid £15 per hour.

The London Living Wage is set at £13.85 per hour.

The new pay deal is backdated and also includes future increases to the London Living Wage rate of £14.80 and a non-consolidated bonus. At the start of the dispute, APCOA was offering their employees in Bromley just £13 per hour.

Craig Prickett, the GMB’s regional organiser, said: “Our members knew what they were worth and stood together on the picket line until they earned it.

“The members deserve immense credit for this, and all local government workers are reminded that by joining a union and standing together, you too can earn inflation-busting pay uplifts.

“This pay deal is significant not just because of the money going into the pockets of these hard-working, front-line staff, but also because it establishes the contract as a London Living Wage contract.

“Bromley Council chiefs will be reminded of this fact when the contract retendering process begins later in the year.”

Bromley Council is Conservative-controlled.
