Let’s go fly a kite: Streatham Common’s festival of flying is being staged on May 10 this year
After a hiatus in 2025, the Streatham Kite Day is back in 2026, this year being staged on Sunday, May 10, from 11am to 5pm.
The event is London’s only free family-friendly kite festival, and combines world-class kite displays with the opportunity to fly your own.
First staged in 1998 as “Wind Day”, thousands flock to Streatham Common to see the displays, fly a kite, enjoy the various attractions lined up for children, and also sample the delicious food and drink on offer at the stalls.
The event is organised by the Friends of Streatham Common charity and is run by volunteers. Entry is free.
Any profits made are used for conservation projects on the Common and in the Rookery Gardens.
The Streatham Society (one of the organisations that will have a stand at the event), says of the kite day: “Streatham Common, with its open space, steady westerly winds and former windmill, was a natural spot for it.
“After that first event, kites became the main attraction and Streatham Kite Day has since grown into a much-loved fixture.”
