Next phase of Streatham Hill works to begin with A23 closures

The next phase of works on the A23 Streatham High Road is to begin on June 29, with overnight closures and traffic reduced to one lane in each direction. This phase of works is set to continue “until August”, according to Transport for London.

Phase 4: the latest stage of works to unblock the A23 on Streatham High Road begins at the end of this month

Work on this project, which is due to last 18 months, began in August 2025, with new pedestrian crossings, a protected cycling route and what TfL says will be improved bus lanes for quicker bus journeys.

Phase 4 of the project will see the construction of new central islands to provide safer waiting areas for pedestrians crossing the road and to help separate traffic flows.

Overnight road closures will be in place between 10pm on Sunday June 28 and 5am on Tuesday June 30 between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue. This will take place across two separate overnight closures.

The first closure will affect the southern section of the scheme (Sternhold Avenue to Telford Avenue), while the second closure will cover the northern section (Telford Avenue to Christchurch Road). “The plan aims to minimise disruption to users as much as possible,” TfL says.

From 5am on June 29 until August 2026, “traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Daytime works for this phase are expected to complete by August 9, followed by a period of overnight resurfacing works later in August”, the transport agency says.

“People travelling in the area are being advised to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys. There will also be temporary changes including bus stop relocations, side road closures, pedestrian diversions and parking suspensions. TfL is encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport during this time and for drivers to consider alternative routes.”

Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said: “The A23 has a poor safety record, and has seen a high number of collisions which have sadly led to injuries and even people losing their lives. These improvements to cycle lanes, bus lanes and crossings will make the area safer for everyone and help us move towards our goal of eliminating deaths and serious injuries from London’s roads.”

There were 72 collisions on this stretch of road in the three years to October 2024, with 75 people injured. “Safety improvements are a key priority,” says TfL, which adds that it will “monitor traffic conditions closely throughout the works and make adjustments where possible, including changes to traffic signal timings to help manage congestion and support bus reliability”.

Southern Gas Networks is undertaking works on a main on Brixton Hill, which is liable to make the traffic congestion in the area even worse.

From September, TfL is to begin the final phase of its A23 works, to the north of the A205 junction, on Brixton Hill.

“A protected cycling route” in Streatham, you say?

Croydon residents can only dream of such luxury. In Croydon, the council continues to remove the flimsy posts (“wands”, as they are known) which were the only protection offered to cyclists. The most recent that I’m aware of were in London Road (outside my home) where workmen removed all the posts on Easter Monday bank holiday (presumably receiving overtime pay from a thrice bankrupt council).
