The David Lean Cinema in the Croydon Clocktower will be among around 100 venues around the country, mostly independent and art house cinemas, that next month will be staging free screenings of the acclaimed British film, 24 Hour Party People.

With a stellar cast that includes Steve Coogan, John Simm, Andy Serkis, Paddy Considine, Ralf Little, Peter Kay, Rob Brydon, Simon Pegg, Lennie James, Shirley Henderson and
Keith Allen, the film was directed by Michael Winterbottom, written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and produced by Andrew Eaton.
Set at the epicentre of Manchester’s music explosion from 1976 to 1992, 24 Hour Party People tells the story of “Madchester” through the eyes of journalist and promoter Tony Wilson, who signed the Happy Mondays and Joy Division and set up Factory Records.
Factory went on to sign some of the most influential musicians of their time and create one of the most famous clubs in the world, The Haçienda.
The film includes cameo appearances from greats of punk and post-punk, including The Happy Mondays’ Rowetta and Paul Ryder, and The Fall’s Mark E Smith, as well as the Buzzcocks’ Howard Deveto and Haçienda DJs Mike Pickering and Dave Haslam.
The free screenings are part of an initiative to mark the 24th anniversary of the film’s release.
These free screenings give audiences a chance to see the film before its theatrical re-release on October 9.
Escapes is a nationwide scheme with a mission to bring cinema to all by hosting more than 100 free screenings every month.
Escapes is supported by the BFI awarding National Lottery Good Cause Funding.
The initiative sets out to make cinema more accessible, celebrate independent cinemas and bring new audiences to local venues.
Every month, Escapes gives away free cinema tickets in over 100 locations, and since it launched in 2024, it has already given away more than 250,000 free cinema tickets.
Free tickets are limited to two per applicant, and since the David Lean is a small cinema, with just 60-or-so seats, you’ll need to get in quick to claim yours. The website does, though, helpfully provide listings of other cinemas nearby which are also taking part in the scheme.
