NHS urges Croydon’s new students to have MenB vaccination

The NHS is running a campaign to help Croydon’s teenagers ensure that they are fully protected against the risk of catching the potentially deadly or disabling Meningitis B, appealing to them to get fully vaccinated before they head off for university.

Two jabs: the NHS is offering free vaccinations via pharmacies to those aged between 17 and 25

The NHS says that London, with the highest concentration of students in the country, is a “potential hotspot” for the disease. University students face a MenB risk seven times higher than young people who don’t go to university, as freshers weeks begin and thousands more students prepare to start term in the coming weeks.

Meningitis B is a severe and aggressive bacterial infection that can become life-threatening within 24 hours. About 1-in-10 cases of bacterial meningitis result in death, while those who survive the infection can face permanent disabilities such as hearing loss, brain damage or amputated limbs.

The NHS’s MenB vaccination drive follows an outbreak centred on the University of Kent in March this year, in which 21 cases were associated with a Canterbury nightclub super-spreader event. Two people died.

Across England between July 2025 and June 2026 there were 348 total confirmed invasive meningococcal disease cases, leading to 26 deaths.

MenB can spread easily and quickly, through kissing or sharing drinks or vapes, especially with the close contact of packed halls and parties.

Health chiefs are urging all eligible students, including the tens of thousands arriving in London from overseas, to get vaccinated as a priority alongside registering with a GP and setting up a student bank account.

‘Think about your health’: NHS London chief nurse Karen Bonner

Karen Bonner, chief nurse for the NHS in London, said: “Freshers week is one of the most exciting times in a young person’s life, full of new friendships, new experiences and a new sense of independence.

“Alongside sorting accommodation, finances and getting to know a new city, we’re encouraging eligible students to think about their health. too.

“Following the meningitis outbreaks earlier this year and the tragic loss of lives, it’s hugely encouraging that so many young people have already had their first MenB vaccine. But I can’t stress enough how vital it is to get a second dose, only then will you have strong protection against this devastating disease.”

Health chiefs are encouraging international students to check their eligibility and book an appointment as part of settling into life in London.

Kevin Fenton, the director of public health for London, added: “Some students may be unfamiliar with MenB vaccination or may not have previously been offered it, which is why we’re encouraging all eligible students to check whether they’re protected before the new term gets underway.”

The MenB vaccination is available to:

  • People born between September 1 2007 and August 31 2008
  • People born on or after July 21 2001 starting university for the first time this autumn, including international students
  • People born on or after July 21 2001 starting some residential further education colleges for the first time this autumn

For full protection, two doses are needed, given at least 28 days apart.

Anyone who misses vaccination before starting university can still get a first dose before December 31, with second doses available at participating pharmacies across London until the end of March 2027.

Seventeen- and 18-year-olds can book through the NHS National Booking Service.

Other eligible students, including international students, should contact a participating pharmacy directly.
