Joseph Matthews, who runs South Croydon-based Electrotech Construction, has been named Electrician of the Year at the Checkatrade Regional Awards for London.

Bright sparky: Joseph Matthews at the awards night last month

The annual awards shine a spotlight on tradespeople who go above and beyond for their customers. Winners are selected for their commitment to professionalism, reliability and helping homeowners feel confident when choosing a trade.

Matthews was selected more than 2,500 nominations nationwide, and picked up his trophy at a ceremony last month held at Twickenham Stadium.

Jambu Palaniappan, chief executive at Checkatrade, said: “Great trades earn their place on Checkatrade and keep earning it. But members like Joseph go a step beyond this already high bar.

“The Checkatrade Awards are all about celebrating the pride and effort our outstanding members put into their work, and shining a light on their achievements. We’re very proud of them all.”

Every tradesperson on Checkatrade has to meet a high standard before they can join, passing up to 12 checks and agreeing to uphold the Checkatrade Standard. Checkatrade monitors trades once they are on the platform, including using customer feedback, so only those who keep delivering great work stay on it.

The Checkatrade Awards will culminate in a national final in central London next month, where category winners from all of the regional events, including Matthews, will come together to celebrate trade excellence.
