Weather warning: the scaffolding outside the former Pratts and Payne bar on Streatham High Road collapsed in the high winds of the stormy weekend
Two people were taken to hospital after being trapped under collapsing scaffolding outside the former Pratts and Payne pub on Streatham High Road yesterday.
The incident came after a weekend of high winds and stormy weather that lashed the country, particularly the south-west and Scotland. There have been two reported fatalities.
Across Croydon, the clear-up has begun of several fallen trees or broken branches, though there have been no reports of any injuries arising from the first storms of the season – Storm Austen and Storm Boelo.
The emergency services were quickly on the scene in Streatham High Road, where the casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance. Their injuries have been reported as not being serious.

Branching out: winds of up to 40mph brought down trees around Croydon, including this one in Wandle Park
London experienced winds of close to 40mph yesterday, and it has been suggested that the scaffolding, which was covered in much sheeting, was blown over in a strong gust.
Eyewitnesses said that there were planks of wood, white tarpaulin sheets and metal poles scattered in the usually very busy road. The police cordoned off the road around lunchtime on Sunday, with buses and other traffic diverted.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 1.30pm on Sunday, October 25, to reports of an incident on Streatham High Road.
“We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team to the scene.
“We treated two patients at the scene and took both of them to a hospital.”
