Champion Edwards seeks sponsors to achieve Olympic dream

One of Croydon’s most hard-working and talented sportsmen is seeking help from local businesses to sponsor him as he progresses towards his Olympic dream.

Teenager Sunny Edwards won his first senior ABA title last month.

At the England Elite championships – what used to be known as the ABAs – 19-year-old Edwards won the senior light-flyweight, 49kg title. It follows five successive national titles at youth and junior levels.

In what was his third bout in just three days in the Echo Arena in Liverpool, Edwards took on the British No1, Joe Maphosa, and beat him on a unanimous points decision.

Edwards, who lives in South Croydon, is coming to the end of his first-year of a degree course at Sheffield Hallam University, but his latest triumph could set him on course to the Rio Olympics next year. “I’m now pushing for a place on the GB team as Joe was their No1 and I’ve just beaten him.

“We’ll see where we go from there. The chance of a shot at the Olympic qualifiers is not a million miles away as Joe was the favourite for a place before we met.”

But Edwards urgently needs some financial backing. “Being in full-time education as well as full-time training, I am unable to seek employment during my free-time as the majority of that time is dedicated to my boxing career.

“As an English Elite champion at only 19 I am pushing for the GB squad full-time and have trials over the coming months. Any sponsorship opportunities would help me pursue my Olympic dream and then into the professional ranks following my brother’s Charlie Edwards footsteps within the next couple of years.”

Sunny Edwards was featured on Sky Sports’ Ringside programme this week. Today, he’s back in the gym at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for a training camp with the England elite squad, before representing his country next weekend in the Three Nations tournament.

Croydon businesses can help support Sunny Edwards’ career with even quite modest amounts, in cash or in kind, and benefit in return for some publicity work and recognition. Perhaps you run a car dealership and could provide the champion boxer with an answer to his transport needs for a year? Perhaps you run a local butcher’s shop and can provide Edwards with some food to help put behind the beef he shows in the ring?

Sunny Edwards would be happy to discuss any reasonable offers.
