Join our tour to see the Minster’s windows on the world, May 21

Join Inside Croydon later this month for an exclusive guided tour around one of the oldest buildings in the borough, and discover more about the history and craftsmanship that went into making the stained glass windows in Croydon Minster.

On Tuesday, May 21, you will have a chance to discover a myriad of fascinating details of the connections between the parish church and the Archbishops of Canterbury over many centuries.

Marvel of the Minster: David Morgan leading a previous iC tour

David Morgan is the Minster’s official archivist, as well as the resident historian at Inside Croydon who has been delighting our readers with the many finely researched and detailed articles about the town, its people and the lives they have led in and around what used to be called the Parish Church.

It was David’s work on the very beginnings of the church in Croydon that discovered that the town is probably at least 150 years older than anyone had previously thought, with its foundations going back to around 810 and the Anglo-Saxons.

On this tour, our erudite guide will be focusing on the beautiful and historic stained glass that has been installed in the old building’s walls over the course of the last 150 years – how it was made, what the artwork represents, and who the windows were dedicated to and why.

David outlined some of the details here – Artists in glass who gave the Minster its windows on the world – but on this guided tour, will be exploring more detail behind all the Minster’s windows.

Here’s how the evening tour will pan out…

Arrive just before 5.30pm to be delighted by the choral beauty of that night’s Evensong (recommended), with the tour of the Minster’s stained glass windows due to start at 6.15pm.

The tour should last around 45 minutes.

Everyone, of all faiths or none, are welcome.

Inside Croydon subscribers will have priority booking places and will be sent a special discount code to save £2 on the ticket price.

For everyone else, we are asking for donations of £5 per person for the tour. Proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the Minster, an ancient piece of Croydon heritage.
