Aldi, the country’s fourth-largest supermarket chain, is looking to get even bigger, and is on the hunt for new store locations in South Croydon, as well as Beckenham and Bromley, as part of its rapid expansion drive.

Stocking up: could a new Aldi supermarket be coming to a main road near you?
Last month, Aldi conducted a bit of public research to discover where in Britain needs new Aldi stores most. Based on more than 4,000 responses, Aldi has identified priority areas in London, which also include Woodford and Surbiton, Notting Hill, Walthamstow and Barnet.
South Croydon has long had a site identified for building a new Lidl and flats (loads more flats), but that scheme has been stalled for several years. Further south along Brighton Road, in Purley, Marks and Spencer wants to convert an old dairy building into one of its new Food Hall things, but things there have been quiet for a while, too.
Aldi works its reputation as the supermarket with lower prices and great quality. It currently operates on the Purley Way, in Coulsdon town centre and in Selsdon among its 1,020 stores. Aldi, according to the business “is committed to continuing towards its long-term target of more than 1,500 stores across the UK”.
Jonathan Neale, in charge of Aldi’s real estate, said, “We recognise there is huge demand in certain regions for more stores, which is why we decided to get the public’s input on our latest list of priority locations. They have helped us identify where demand is greatest and we will continue to work to bring Aldi to as many people as possible.”
Anybody who has a site that may fit Aldi’s requirements should contact realestateacquisitions@aldi.co.uk.
“Each site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces. Ideally the location will be near a main road with good visibility and access,” Aldi says.

ROTTEN BOROUGH AWARDS: In January 2024, Croydon was named among the country’s rottenest boroughs for a SEVENTH successive year in the annual round-up of civic cock-ups in Private Eye magazine

Lord save us from Aldi, with their 100+ free car parking spaces inviting people to drive, congest our highways, pollute our air and make the ice caps melt even faster
It’s a bit difficult doing a family shop and carrying it all by bus. Impossible on a push bike and therefore larger supermarkets favour providing parking.
