Chance to see Shaun the Sheep at BFI without getting fleeced

Don’t delay, sign-up today: the special BFI free schools screening of Shaun the Sheep at the BFI on the South Bank is on July 3

Hundreds of Croydon schoolchildren could get to enjoy a free animated movie from Oscar-winners Aardman, if their teachers get a hurry on, and all thanks to the latest initiative from an arts charity.

As part of the Primary Arts Go and See programme, teachers at London primary schools can register for freebie tickets for a special screening of Shaun the Sheep at the British Film Institute on on the South Bank on Thursday, July 3.

There will be a special live introduction from Aardman director, Lucy Izzard.

Participating schools will receive free stop-motion modelling materials for pupils and free access to Into Film’s Animate with Aardman CPD course for teachers, so they can keep the creativity flowing back in the classroom.

The screening has been arranged by charity A New Direction. Since launching in September 2024, more than 350 schools have registered to be part of Primary Arts.

The Go and See strand of the programme gives schools the chance to bring a year group of children into arts and cultural venues across the capital to experience a range of high-quality, inspiring shows and activities across film, theatre and visual arts.

Gasps of delight: more than 350 London primaries have signed up for the programme of free arts events

More than 4,500 tickets are being given to primary schools across London this academic year through the Primary Arts Go and See programme, which gives pupils an experience of learning outside the classroom and to explore themes relatable across all primary year groups in mainstream and SEND settings.

The full Primary Arts programme, including Go and See tickets for the 2025-2026 school year, will be announced soon, but registration is open now for teachers in eligible schools.

The Shaun the Sheep screening is just one example of the delights that might be available.

“We know how powerful cultural experiences can be for pupils and teachers too, and that’s why we’re excited about the Primary Arts programme and the opportunities it creates for pupils and teachers across London to access amazing creative and cultural experiences for free,” said Steve Moffitt, the CEO of A New Direction.

Registration for Primary Arts is free and is open to mainstream and SEND state primary schools in every London borough. Bookings for the 2025-2026 academic year will open in September and early sign up is encouraged so that schools can access new opportunities and offers as soon as they are available.

Primary Arts is funded by The City of London Corporation City Educational Trust Fund.
