Discover the wonders of King’s Wood with these autumn walks

King’s Wood: almost 150 acres of public open space in Sanderstead. To discover more, take part in one of the guided walks

The Friends of King’s Wood are staging a series of walks through the wild and undisturbed woodland over the next few weeks, for local residents to discover more about the natural environment that’s on their doorsteps.

And the walks are all free of charge, with no need to book.

Carpeted in bluebells in the spring, King’s Wood is a large area of almost 150 acres of ancient woodland in Sanderstead, criss-crossed by long straight paths which can be accessed from Kingswood Lane, Kingswood Way and Orchard Road, Hamsey Green.

Previously used for bird shooting (hence the long pathways, or rides), it was purchased in 1937 under the Green Belt Act and is now public open space. The keeper’s cottage still stands in the woods.

There are three walks coming up, all led by Marion Davis.

  • Sun Oct 5: Cut and Come Again: Looking at the ancient craft of coppicing, and how it renews energy in the wood.
  • Sun Nov 2: Holes Large and Small: A walk of discovery looking for all kinds of holes, natural ones and those created by animals and humans.
  • Sun Nov 16: What’s Under Our Feet: Feel a wood bank with your feet. Clay, sandy and chalky soils contain roots, fallen leaves, twigs and branches, and slumbering life forms awaiting spring.

All the walks start at 10am from where Orchard Road, Sanderstead, enters the woodland (off Limpsfield Road, and the 403 bus).

Children are welcome, if accompanied. No dogs.

The walks last around two hours and return to the starting point.
