
Road block: police used their vehicles to close off Surrey Street at lunchtime today following the man’s fall in the street market

The air ambulance and other emergency services were called to a horrific incident on Surrey Street today, after a man, aged in his 30s, fell from a height, thought to be from the pedestrian walkway over the street market in the middle of a busy Friday lunchtime.

Police shut off Surrey Street while first responders dealt with the man’s injuries.
The walkway, which provides pedestrian access from the higher level Croydon High Street down to Surrey Street, is around two storeys high, and estimated to be between 25 and 30 feet high.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told Inside Croydon: “We were called at 12.50pm today to reports of a person fallen from height on Surrey Street, Croydon.
“We sent resources, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
“We treated a man for a head injury and took him to hospital as a priority.”
In a statement issued to this website, the Metropolitan Police said, “Police were called at 12.50hrs on Friday, October 17, after a man sustained serious injuries after falling from height on Surrey Street, Croydon.
“The man, in his 30s, has been taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
“The incident is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.”
