Meteor shower and solar eclipse will keep star gazers busy

The Croydon Astronomical Society will be busy on “the Glorious Twelfth”, but their quest has nothing to do with shooting game birds and everything to do with observing a partial solar eclipse.

Graham Cluer, from CAS, tells Inside Croydon: “On Wednesday August 12 there will be a partial solar eclipse.

“If there is any chance of seeing this we will be present to observe the eclipse from three sites. All members of the public are welcome to join us.”

The CAS are not using their observatory near Kenley Airfield for this exercise.

From 6pm on August 12, CAS will have members based…

In each case , CAS will be there until 7.30pm.

In addition CAS star-gazers will be on the airfield from 10pm on August 12 until the early hours of August 13 to watch the Perseid meteor shower. “This event depends on clear skies,” CAS says, with their usual caveat for the weather.

On Sunday September 13 – London Open House day – the CAS observatory will be open to the public from 1pm to 4pm, “whatever the weather”, they say.

The sky at night: talented CAS members have captured many images of the wonders of the skies at their Kenley Observatory

“If skies are clear we will also do some solar observing.”

Regular Saturday night observatory openings begin at the Observatory from September 3, “whenever the skies are clear”.
