Don’t divert from the diversion, drivers on M25 are warned

Don’t divert from the diversion, or risk having to pay the £12.50 ULEZ charge – or worse.

Follow the diversions: the M25 is to close between J9 and J10 from Friday night

That’s the warning to motorists who might be affected by this weekend’s planned closure of the M25 between Junctions 9 at Leatherhead and 10 at Cobham.

This weekend will see the second of five planned closures of the M25 on sections connecting with Junction 10 as part of a £317million project.

The RAC has advised drivers not to rely on SatNavs in case they direct them on to roads where ULEZ is enforced.

National Highways says anyone ignoring the diversion signs while trying to find shorter routes could be subject to the £12.50 daily fee if their vehicle does not meet emissions standards, or face a £180 fine if there is a failure to pay.

The M25 will be closed in both directions between Junctions 9 and 10 from 9pm on Friday May 10 until 6am on Monday May 13.

It is one of the busiest sections of the London oribital motorway, linking Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Diversion routes will take cars on a 19-mile journey on A roads, crossing from Surrey into London’s ultra-low emission zone. “Although the cameras will be active, no enforcement action will be taken,” said Jonathan Wade of National Highways.

“However, if you ignore the diversion signs and do your own thing, then if your vehicle’s not compliant, you do run the risk of getting caught.”

This phase of the infrastructure works will see concrete beams for a new bridge and a gantry lifted into place.

The previous M25 closure took place in March when traffic congestion was not as bad as had been feared, with many motorists taking alternative routes.

This weekend, Wade said there was a “very real” risk the previous lack of disruption meant some motorists would not heed warnings to re-plan journeys.

Other stretches of the M25 will also be disrupted this weekend due to ongoing work to retrofit additional emergency stopping areas on smart motorway sections.

The next planned closure between Junctions 9 and 10 is due to take place in August.

  1. Let’s take on the “bladerunners” at their own game, and hide signs warning drivers about the diversion and ULEZ

  2. Chris Flynn says:

Google Maps warns you about ULEZ. (I know this, because every time I use it it warns me that my house is in the ULEZ zone!)
