Deadlift reckoning: Trinity School’s Hannah Karpal broke the British junior record with one of her lifts at the national championships last month
Hannah Karpal, a Trinity School sixth former, broke a national record as she finished second in the British junior powerlifting championships staged at Solihull last month.
The performance has seen her called up to the Great Britain squad, with the possibility of being selected for the world championships and European championships later this year.
Karpal’s lifts included a the record-breaking 24-stone deadlift – almost three times her own body weight. Across all three lifts – deadlift, squat and bench press – Karpal lifted 323kilogrammes (710ib) in total.
“The main aim of competing in the championships was to put up a good performance, and I knew I had to place in the top two to have a chance of being selected for Team GB,” Karpal said.

“Despite not achieving all the numbers I wanted, I came away with competition personal bests in every lift and came second in my category with a 323kg total.
“I also managed to break the British deadlift record with 153kg on my second attempt, very narrowly missing out on 160.5kg on my third.”
Karpal had been using her weight-lifting as conditioning and strength training for other sports she participates in at Trinity, but her performances have seen her firmly established as one of the elite in her age group in this country, including placing eighth at last year’s world juniors in Romania, and winning the British under-18 title last May.
She says that now her “priority is A Level revision for the next few months, but I will continue to plan my time well to ensure training doesn’t fall behind at all. Especially as this is my last year as a Sub-Junior so I want to do as best as possible in the next competitions, especially with GB squad training coming up on May 19”.
And Trinity School said: “Amazing results and we wish Hannah every success in lifting weights and revision books over the coming months!”
