Pride’s making a comeback with town centre ‘mini’-festival

Croydon Pride will take place this year, with a not-so-“mini” festival, starting on Friday evening, and with music, dance and acts in the town centre throughout Saturday afternoon.

Croydon Pride was under threat this year when the cash-strapped council pulled the plug on funding for staging in Wandle Park, which also sank hopes of staging the annual Mela (so much for our “borough of culture”).

But the somehow, the people behind Pride have managed to pull together a range of activities, starting with a screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the David Lean Cinema on Friday night, and then really kicking on the following morning, with events outside the Clocktower from 10.30am.

With the exception of the cinema screening, all the events are free to attend, with the festival really getting underway from noon until 6pm on the pedestrianised area of the High Street. The Croydon Pride parade will start outside Marks and Spencer on North End at 2pm.

“I am thrilled to see our community come together once again to celebrate love, diversity, and acceptance,” said Paula Goodwin, Croydon Pride’s chair.

“Despite the challenges we faced with funding this year, the spirit of unity and pride shines brighter than ever. This event is a testament to the resilience and strength of our community, and I am honoured to be a part of it.”
